It's time to talk about the weather

Thinking about travelling to the UK, but worried about the weather? Let me put your mind at ease. It's bad. In fact, it is much worse than you probably think. A bit of rain is all part of the British experience right? Well, yes. But, the quality of our rain is probably worse than the quality of your rain. You probably get rain that's a bit of an event. It crashes down dramatically bringing life to the parched soil. Our rain is not an event. It's a constant drizzle. One of our most famous poets, Ted Hughes, made an entire career out of moaning about our weather.

This is why British peoples' go to on the smorgasbord of small talk frippery is the weather. Our island's gambit is from damp to sodden. Except for one week in August where everybody moans about how hot it is. It is why we don't have aircon. We simply wouldn't use it enough for it to be worthwhile.

The abject state of the British weather only became fully apparent when I upped sticks to live in South Korea. I remember walking to my office in the glaring sun, one mid-October morning and found myself racking my brain about when I had last experienced rain. A glow of joy passed through my soul when I realised it had been months. For the first time in my life, I had not seen rain for months and it was bloody brilliant!

There is one marvelous byproduct of British weather though. It's perfect for walking*. Our island never gets too hot, nor does it get to cold. This was one of the reasons our conglomerate of island nations became comparatively wealthy in Medieval times. Lots of rain and few extremes of temperature made it a great place to farm. If like me you have attempted a walking tour of a tropical country in the summer, you'll appreciate the debilitating role weather can play when exploring a city. There is absolutely none of that worry to be had in London.

London, zone one is small and best seen on foot. Contact us today to see a side of London you've never seen before. Our tours go ahead come rain, or come shine (but usually rain).

* as long as you have a good brolly**.
